When a group of dog rescuers arrived at the market to show the dogs available for adoption, somebody had left 12 puppies on the street – 8 of them were approximately 5 weeks old.

In shock, the rescuers didn’t know what to do. The group had recently canceled several adoption days at the market because of bad weather, so they were over their capacity with puppies still needing to be adopted out. Also, the abandoned puppies were so small that they needed to be fed every two hours, including at night.

That’s when a spayed stray dog approached, lay down beside the shoe box where the puppies were sleeping, and began caring for them.

She wouldn’t let anyone get near the babies.

Very carefully, the rescuers placed the puppies closer to her.

She began caressing them and offering the warmth of her belly to the newborns.

The maternal instinct kicked in and…

after a few hours, she had milk and was feeding the puppies.

The rescue group named her Vida, which means “life” in Portuguese.

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me; I gave him a few pats on his head; He then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.
The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar:

I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar:

He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 – he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?

A kitten has survived an unexpected ride from the Kapiti Coast to Plimmerton early this morning after stowing away in a car’s wheel arch.

The car’s occupants, who were not cat owners, were surprised to hear meows as they drove south late last night, eventually stopping at the Plimmerton weigh station to investigate

said Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade firefighter Ben Troy.

Two hours and one fire appliance later, the kitten was located and freed around 2am. It had somehow found its way into a small compartment inside the car’s wheel arch.

Mr Troy said the kitten, not yet named, was extraordinarily lucky to have survived.

That’s one life down already

The mysterious mewing in Vickie Mendenhall’s home started about the time she bought a used couch for $27. After days of searching for the source of the noise, she found a very hungry calico cat living in her sofa.

Her boyfriend, Chris Lund, was watching TV on Tuesday night and felt something move inside the couch. He pulled it away from the wall, lifted it up and there was the cat, which apparently crawled through a small hole on the underside.

Mendenhall contacted Value Village, where she bought the couch, but the store had no information on who donated it. So she took the cat to SpokAnimal CARE, the animal shelter where she works, so it could recover, and contacted media outlets in hopes of finding the owner.

Sure enough, Bob Killion of Spokane showed up to claim the cat on Thursday after an acquaintance alerted him to a TV story about it. Killion had donated a couch on Feb. 19, and his 9-year-old cat, Callie, disappeared at about the same time.

K9 dog Rambo sits in the middle of 150 pounds of high-grade marijuana that he detected in vehicle.

Five Virginia Department of Corrections officers have been charged with animal cruelty involving the fondling of a K-9 dog and videotaping the two incidents.

All five officers were training at the Academy for Staff Development in Goochland County to become K-9 handlers. They were charged across the James River in Powhatan County where the kennel is located, at the Powhatan Correctional Center.

Facing misdemeanor animal-cruelty charges are Kelvin Thompson, 25, who works at Green Rock Correctional Center in Chatham; Melvin Boone, 40, who worked at the state prison in Sussex County; Adam R. Webb, 27, and Cheri Campbell, 35, who work at Nottoway Correctional Center; and Anthony Eldridge, 33, a sergeant who worked at Nottoway.

Powhatan Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert B. Beasley Jr. said Thompson “allegedly had some sexual contact with the animal.” The male dog, a German shepherd or shepherd mix, was not harmed, he said.

“Essentially, he was touching the dog’s penis with his hand,” Beasley said. “The others were there filming it. That’s actually how we learned of it — there’s a video.”

A corrections employee saw the video and reported it to a superior, Beasley said.

The events occurred between June 16 and Aug. 1, according to arrest warrants. All five officers were charged Oct. 2 by summons.

Terry N. Grimes, a Roanoke attorney representing Thompson, said his client planned to plead not guilty but admitted to fondling the animal.

“I would characterize it as hazing,” he said, claiming that Thompson was told by the others, “If you masturbate your K-9 unit, you’ll have greater control over it.”

The Department of Corrections confirmed that Eldridge and Boone no longer are employed by the state, but Thompson, Webb and Campbell are.

The Department of Corrections acknowledged that the matter had been investigated internally but declined to say whether Eldridge and Boone were terminated or left voluntarily. The department also would not say whether the others were on leave.

Grimes suggested Beasley would have a difficult time proving animal cruelty.

“The statute is not set up to deal with this type of thing. I don’t think the legislature quite had this in mind,” he said.

Beasley said the misdemeanor charge for each defendant was the same, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

“They were all kind of there assisting in one way or the other,” he said.

In Virginia, bestiality is covered by crimes against nature, which could have resulted in a felony charge, according to state statutes. But a felony charge requires “carnal knowledge” of a “brute beast,” implying intercourse, said Beasley, who added that he consulted with the state veterinarian’s office before filing the charges.

Trial is set for Nov. 20 for all except Webb, who will be tried Dec. 11.

Asked if he knew why the officers videotaped the incidents, Beasley replied: “I don’t have the slightest idea – I really don’t.”

Xu Jirong, of Qingdao, in northern China’s Shandong province, says the cat, appropriately named Chubby, has a 27 inches waist – bigger than a human girl’s.

She puts on more than two pounds every year – I suspect the problem is that she much prefers pork to fish.”
She can swallow down four or five pieces of raw pork within minutes.

However, Xu says Chubby is quite a good watchcat.

She attacks any stranger who comes in the apartment by scratching them – she’s really quite terrifying.

However, a vet said Chubby was clearly obese and said that all pets need a healthy diet and exercise.

He doesn’t leave his place and protects the money just with his sight. His owner was found nearby. It was an old lady. She told the story that she had rescued the cat from the slaughters, but at that time she had already owned some pets and couldn’t feed them all, so he decided to let the pets earn the money for themselves.

An orange tabby named Brownie was shot in the head with an arrow and amazingly survived.

The 13-inch arrow only pierced the kitty’s muscle, avoiding his skull and eyes – and a vet in rural Indiana was able to remove it.

“He’s just a miracle cat,” said Sarah Hayes, chief executive of the Monroe County Humane Association.

“He was just purring and rubbing up against people, even with the arrow in his head,” Hayes said.

“He’s a loving, sweet, sweet cat.”

Brownie had been missing for three days when his owner Dillon Eads saw him come up over a hill Aug. 28 with the arrow in his head.

Eads, 83, called police right away.

He suspects that someone was cruelly using his beloved pet for target practice.

“I never felt so sorry for anything in my life. It just broke my heart,” he tearfully told local television stations.

The humane association is offering a $1,450 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who hurt Brownie.

The good-natured feline, which even loves dogs, is healing well and will be reunited with Eads next week, Hayes said.

He has eight lives left, anyway.

“He’s on the adventure of his life,” Hayes said.

Cats and cars never mix, and poor Casper the cat has learned his lesson after getting his head wedged in a spare tire. The mischievous Siamese found himself in the tight spot and needed the help of a fire-crew after a passer-by found him in distress.

The RSPCA were first on the scene and officers took him to Bury St. Edmunds fire station in Suffolk.

And Casper is now fine after the firemen spent an hour cutting him free.

Casper put up a struggle – scratching and biting his rescuers – but was finally freed and is now in the care of an cat-loving RSPCA officer.
